Soon, a govt policy for Hry varsities to ramp up sports infra
Gurgaon: The state government is coming up with a sports policy for higher educational institutions. The main objective is to increase both the number and diversity of students participating in sports over time, officials said.
It’s aimed at two main themes; ‘sports for all’ and ‘excellence in sports’.
The policy draft, put out for suggestions from stakeholders, states that the requisite sports infrastructure would be created in all the universities in the state. It envisages that the government should support the state universities in upgrading their sports infrastructure, either through its own resources or by making funds available from the Centre.
Director of higher education Rajiv Rattan Singh said, “The policy draft has been prepared and put out in public for recommendations from the stakeholders and people in general.”
“The sports cell will devise an objective mechanism for obtaining free and fair feedback from all the stakeholders regarding its efficacy and implementation for realizing the central objective: promotion of sports activities in the colleges and universities of Haryana. The sports policy and its implementation will be fine-tuned in light of this feedback, periodically,” a senior official said.
The state will create and upgrade national-level sports facilities in the universities as per the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) calendar.
To commemorate Major Dhyan Chand, all colleges will be required to celebrate National Sports Day on August 29, every year, by organizing high visibility sports competitions.
Moreover, regular off-season coaching camps for the state’s collegiate sportspersons will be organized by the Department of Higher Education, in collaboration with Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSIS), Ambsala, and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.
Players shall be given an allowance for their nutrition of Rs 350 per day for every sports tournament they take part in, in the state, and Rs 500 if they partake in a tournament outside of the state.
The state will receive grants from the Ministry of Higher Education, Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) and University Grants Commission (UGC) for the upkeep of existing sports infrastructure and hostels.
