Former World No.1 and winner of 39 major titles, Billie Jean King, reckoned that Serena Williams will retire as the greatest player the tennis world has ever seen. Recently, Williams made her comeback and also played at the Wimbledon where she lost to unseeded Harmony Tan in the first round of the grass-court tournament at SW19.

On Tuesday, August 9, Serena hinted at hanging up her boots after the upcoming edition of the US Open, which is scheduled to get underway later this month. King mentioned that Serena has set new benchmarks with her stupendous achievement in her career.

“When Serena steps away from tennis, she will leave as the sport’s greatest player. After a career that has inspired a new generation of players and fans, she will forever be known as a champion who won on the court and raised the global profile of the sport off of it,” King was quoted as saying.

Serena also earned praise from the legendary John McEnrore, who reckoned that Serena should be set free to take her own decisions.

“She should do whatever she wants. She’s an icon. Her place in American society has gone to a place where she deserves it after everything she’s accomplished, everything she’s done,” McEnrore said to USA Today.

McEnroe, also a former World No.1, stated that Serena can be counted amongst the greatest athletes in the sporting fraternity.

“I don’t know the answer whether she wants to play again, I don’t think she needs to play again. She’s in that level where Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tom Brady are. She’s like one of the all-time greatest athletes in the history of any sport — male or female. It seems to be a great place in her life. She’s added a lot,” he added.

Serena is set to turn 41 years old by the end of September.
