Grand Master

My name is S. Kothandan. I began my Karate training at age of 13, while studying in High School. I have more than 54 years’ experience in Martial Art domain. I had unique distinction of having trained in martial arts from 9 Japanese Grand Masters.

I am First ever Indian to receive” 8th Dan – awarded “SOSHIHAN” * Title” from World Grand Master Sohan Eigi Ogasahara the 10 th Dan Japan – 2010. I am the First Indian to be appointed as Sole representative of International Karate-do Ogasahara-ha Shitoryu Association, to train Ogasahara-ha Shito-ryu Karate in ASIA. I founded “Kokino International Karate-Do Organization (KIKO)” a professional recognized body. Under KIKO, I have been imparting Karate training in India for Indian and international students, with a high degree of excellence and perfection, matching to World Standards. This Karate School which had a very modest start in the year 1979 with only 6 students, has so far successfully trained more than 55,000 students.

Karate Major Milestones
  • First Indian to receive” 8th Dan – awarded “SOSHIHAN” Title” from World Grand Master Sohan Kaichio Eigi Ogasahara 10th Dan Japan – 2010.
  • First Indian appointed as Sole representative of International Karate-do Ogasahara-ha Shitoryu Association, to train, to grade & spread Ogasahara-ha Shito-ryu Karate in ASIA.
  • Solid Training background in Martial Arts Domain from nine Japanese Grand Masters viz., Ken-ei Mabuni, Sohan Eigi Ogasahara, Ishikawa, Fumio Demura, Shintani, T.Yoneda, Keiji Tomiyama, Ken-zo Mabuni, Kozo Kuniba in Shito-ryu style of Karate.
  • In 1980, Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Thiru M.G. Ramachandran, appreciated the Kokino Indian Shito-ryu Karate team whole heartedly, for participating in the 2nd Asian Shito-ryu karate Tournament held in Indonesia.
  • In 1994, Chief Ministers of Tamilnadu Miss.J. Jayalalitha, besides her appreciation, helped the Indian Kokino Team with financial assistance, for participating in the International Championship held in Canada, where Kokino won 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal.
  • In 1999, Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Thiru M. Karunanidhi, felicitated the winners of the Kokino Indian Team for their outstanding performance in the International Karate Championship, held in Durban, South Africa.
  • First Indian Karate Expert to develop 2 World Kata Champions, who have won 1 Silver & 2 Bronze medals in the 3rd World Junior Karate Championships – 2010 – Argentina.
  • First Indian Karate Expert who took our country to the 6th position in the World Medal Ranking – Junior World Championship – 2010 – Argentina.
  • Appointed as Chairman (Administration) of World United Karate Organization Asia – 2009.
  • First Indian Karate Expert, appointed as World Chief Referee (Technical) – 2009.
  • First Indian Karate Expert who was selected to attend World Referee Seminar – Italy, 2008 – WUKO.
  • First Indian Karate Expert to become a World Medalist – Spain, 2007 – WUKO
  • First Indian Karate Expert – who took the country to the 25th position in the World Medal Ranking – Senior World Championship – Spain – 2007.
  • First Indian Karate Expert who produced 2 Asian Continental Chief Referees, 4 Asian Continental Referees, 3 Asian Continental Judges, 4 Grand Champions, 54 International medalists apart from 350 National Medalists.
  • First Indian Karate Expert to publish a Book in both Tamil & English “A Complete Book on Karate Competition”, by which one can organize a District, State or National level Tournament by themselves
  • First Indian Karate Expert who created Katas and introduced SAFETY UNCHAKU as a sport, with an apt syllabus and belt System, along with Safety Nunchaku Kumite rules
  • First Indian to conduct “KATA TRAINING –SEMINAR” for every two months, in India, developing most Advanced Katas from Shito-ryu Style from 2013 (Practical as well as Theory — Tamil, English & Japanese)

Safety Nunchaku – A Crown in Martial Art

Safety Nunchaku Grand Master Soshihan S. Kothandan – As the First Indian I have created “Safety Nunchaku” an instrument designed for Martial Art & Children’s’ Sport. I have introduced Safety Nunchaku and demonstrated during 2005. Concurrently, after dedication of years of research, I have developed new Martial Art Safety Nunchaku. I have introduced it in the Worldwide Launch event that was held during 2015 in Chennai, Tamilnadu in the presence of VIPS including Hon. Justice Rajeshwaran.

Safety Nunchaku has the following distinct features to make our country proud in international arena.

*”Safety Nunchaku” is the outcome of so many years of research in the field of Nunchaku. By considering the concept of Light weight in mind, Safety Nunchaku has been made up of foam/rubber with different colors and different sizes

*”Light weight” – Less chances of getting injured. Even if it hurts during practice, it will not deter continuous practice.

* “International Standard Syllabus” – For the first time in World – Syllabus has been framed in international standard for each grade level. Achievers are awarded with Certificates for their dedicated efforts for each grade.

* “Technique” – Each and Every Movement of Safety Nunchaku has been framed and named as a Technique, and out of that each Techniques 15 Unique Katas were formed. These Katas has been created for the first time in World, with international standard that made our country proud around the globe.

* “Examination” – Safety Nunchaku includes 10 types of Examination to validate and verify the talent of the Practitioners for every belt out of 7. The Belt awarding procedures have been created separately for each and every belt level, in detail.

* “License” – Black Belt holders only can get the license and the License holders only will be eligible to teach Safety Nunchaku.

* “Official Pass Book” – Official pass book is issued to Masters and Students who practice safety Nunchaku, continuously.

*”Sports – Competitions” – Created the following competitions to spread Safety Nunchaku around the world, as Sports. :

  • 2. Double Safety Nunchaku Kata
  • 3. Sanchaku Kata
  • 4. Single Safety Nunchaku Team Kata
  • 5. Single Safety Nunchaku Own Style

  • 9. Double Safety Nunchaku – Direction. It has unique Own style & Direction method to ignite the creativity among the practitioners.

*”Katas” – He has created & introduced to the World for the first time, the following three kinds of 100 Safety Nunchaku Katas:

  • 1. Single Safety Nunchaku Katas — 34
  • 2. Double Safety Nunchaku Katas – 48
  • 3. Sanchaku Katas — 18

All the above achievements are possible only because of the personal interest, Involvement, tireless, devoted and dedicated efforts of Safety Nunchaku Grandmaster Soshihan S.Kothandan. Under his able guidance, KOKINO INTERNATIONAL Karate Organization is all set to achieve the peak of perfection and our country will recognize his sincere efforts. Moreover, he was an Officer in the State Bank of India and has voluntarily retired, to devote more time for the sake of his interest in developing this Martial Art and create strong and energetic citizens for our country (India).
