Cross country held to promote varsity games
Lucknow: A six-km open cross country race and torch rally was organized at KD Singh Babu Stadium here on Sunday to create awareness on the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) and to boost the morale of athletes.
Sports fans reached the venue early in the morning to encourage participants of the six-km open cross country and torch rally. They also cheered for the athletes participating in the Khelo India University Games.
Babli Verma, who secured the first position in the women’s category in the open cross country race, has been selected for the upcoming Khelo India University Game. Babli, a resident of Barabanki district, will represent Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University in the 3000m steeplechase discipline of athletics competition in KIUG. Islam Ali secured the first position in the cross country men’s category.
The race was flagged off by divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob and Lucknow district magistrate Suryapal Gangwar at 7.00 am on Sunday from the main gate of KD Singh Babu Stadium. The torch rally also started from KD Singh Babu Stadium and the torch of the Games was held by Gangwar who handed over the torch to Jacob. The torch rally stopped back at the stadium after travelling from Atal square.
Many veteran former players as well as emerging players raced along with the torch in their hands. Emerging athletes also held this torch and pledged to make efforts to make the state and country proud in sports.
Babli Verma and Mohd Islam Ali were given Rs 21,000 each. In addition, Rs 11,000 was handed over to players who secured the second position in each category, while those who secured the third position got Rs 5,100 each while Rs 3100 was given to players who secured fourth to sixth position in both men’s and women’s category. Anandeshwar Pandey, general secretary, Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association, Ajay Kumar Sethi, regional sports officer, Lucknow, Ranjana Gupta, international hockey player and other sports personalities were present.
ACS, sports, inspects shooting range
Navneet Sehgal, additional chief secretary, sports, visited the Dr Karni Singh Shooting range on the outskirts of the national capital to oversee preparations ahead of the third Khelo India University Games 2022 Uttar Pradesh. Sehgal said, “It is a big event for the state. For the first time a national level multi-sport event is taking place here. It will encourage local sportspersons to do better in life and go ahead with sports as a career.”
