Glasgow officially confirmed as the host city for 2026 Commonwealth Games; Cricket and Hockey, among many sports axed

Glasgow has been confirmed as the host city for the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games. The city will host the Games from July 23 to August 2.

It will be the fourth time that the Commonwealth Games will be held in Scotland. Edinburgh held the Games in 1970 and 1986. Glasgow then hosted the 2014 edition of the Games.

The city got the rights to host the Games after the Australian state of Victoria, the original host city, withdrew from holding the ]Games citing financial constrains on its economy.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will however be curtailed with respect to the number of sports that have been included for the quadrennial event. Only 10 sports programme have been made part of these Games. The sports that have been included are Athletics and Para Athletics (Track & Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, and 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball.

Sports which were part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games,  held in Birmingham, which have been axed for the the upcoming edition are Hockey, Badminton, Wrestling, Cricket, Table Tennis, Shooting and Squash.

These sports will be held across four venues Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena.  Over 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to participate in these Games.

According to the official website “the Glasgow 2026 Games will deliver over £100 million of inward investment into the city and is projected to support over £150 million of economic value added for the region”
